Have any of you ever watched the TV show called What Would You Do? I've watched it a couple of times, but tonights episode struck a chord with me and I'd like to share.
Key players are all hired actors:
Cashier at Deli
Two Hispanic males who supposedly don't speak English
What happens when the two males come into the deli and the cashier refuses to serve them because they are "illegal" and don't speak English??
Out of 88 people that came in off of the street..
49 ignored the ignorance of the cashier
9 were on the cashiers side
30 jumped in and helped the two men and/or stood up for them
1 lady got so mad she left in tears.
Mario, a LEGAL immigrant from Mexico, was interview by the host a Hispanic American himself. Mario wakes up every morning at 430am and walks 2 miles to a meeting place where day laborers meet up in hopes of getting work for the day. Mario sat and watched as the above went down. When asked how he felt....
He broke down into tears. Saying how he hates the racism. How people like him are treated like animals. He goes on to say that we are all flesh and blood people, just different languages and skin color. He wishes it wasn't so hard for people like him to come to America and not be judged.
Here is this grown man, crying on national TV. It really struck me right in the heart. I am as guilty as the next person when it comes to illegal immigration. It pisses me off to no end. I AM all for legal immigration and think that we should make it easier for people to come into this great country we live in and make a better life for themselves and their families. I am going to probably cause a lot of anger amongst a few people close to me, but that's ok. At least I'll know that you all understand how I feel. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE should ever be turned away because they don't speak English. That is just pure and simple racism. We don't turn away people who speak German, or French or Italian. Why turn away someone who speaks Spanish? It makes no sense. I am guilty, like I said above, of getting extremely frustrated with people who speak little English. I think they could put forth the effort to learn English, at least enough to hold a conversation. I whole heartedly feel that way. But I also feel that we as Americans could be a little more understanding. Dont jump to conclusions. O she doesn't speak English so she must be an illegal immigrant. That is not always the case. And how do you prove someone is illegal?
A lady towards the end of the show said this, " God sent us to this earth, me and you, and just because these two men are different doesn't give you the right to act that way. We are all brothers and sisters in Gods eyes" to that woman I say AMEN! God did in fact create us equal. I know I know some of you feel that the "Mexicans" are taking all of our jobs. You know what I've come to realize? Some Americans are lazy. They don't want to do the manual labor and if they do they want to be paid top dollar. Immigrants are willing to work hard and bust butt from dusk til dawn and be paid very little. They are hard workers, I can attest to that as we have a group of hispanic young men painting our apartment complex. They are out there in the 120 degree weather painting and climbing up and down ladders all day. Sure there are a lot of Americans who do the same things though. I know that. I simply feel that if there are men and women out there willing to do the work and for less money then so be it. I 100% think they should be legal immigrants and should have to prove that. Absolutely. BUT I think they deserve a chance. Should they learn enough language to carry on a conversation in English? Yes I believe so. Will they? Who knows.
I would hope that should one of the situations on the show arose in front of me, I would be one of the people to stand up and say "Hey! What you are doing is not right! You cannot treat people that way." Let the people who make the laws handle the logistics. You just treat people how you want to be treated.
*Stepping down off my soap box now*
I feel the way you do. I am guilty of the same things too. I still have some issues with illegal immigration but I know that some are here legaly and still can't speak English. I think its more that I'm frustrated not knowing what they are saying or wanting. That was the nice thing when I worked at DQ! All they had to do was show me with their fingers what number meal they wanted or say it cuz I could understand up to 10 in Spanish!! I also get frustrated because I know some of those people CAN speak english, they just wont. Thats one thing that stinks is that they are just as bad as the way people treat them :( I think its going to be an ongoing issue but I am trying to be better!! Thats been one of my goals, I dont want my children to see me that way and I want them to grow up without all the racism and show that that is not how their parents are.
